Assistant Professor, Culinary Arts, The Culinary Institute of America; Hyde Park, NY

Walter Grote ‘96 is assistant professor in culinary arts at the Hyde Park Campus of The Culinary Institute of America. Walter's culinary journey began at the Beekman Arms in Rhinebeck, New York, owned by Larry Forgione '74, a renowned figure known as the godfather of American Cuisine. Walter later relocated to Boston, where he gained invaluable experience working under acclaimed chefs Lydia Shire at Biba and Jacky Robert at Maison Robert. After his time in Boston, he moved to South Louisiana, where he helped open a restaurant and worked at various prestigious culinary establishments, enhancing his skills and expanding his repertoire. His next adventure took him to Amman, Jordan, where he spent several years working at an independent restaurant before joining the Marriott, Amman, further broadening his international culinary experience.  

Upon returning to the United States, Walter worked in several local restaurants, joined Restaurant Associates in Hyde Park, and then became faculty at the CIA, where he continues to inspire future generations of culinary professionals. Throughout his time at the CIA, Walter has taught a diverse array of courses and has been cross trained in several key subjects, including Culinary Fundamentals, Cuisines of the Mediterranean, Garde Manger, and Banquets.  

In addition to his instructional duties, Walter plays an active role in student activities, proudly serving as a tasting judge for the annual chili cook-off and overseeing the annual pizza competition. He is also instrumental in planning and supervising the annual Triwizard's Feast, creating memorable experiences for students.
