Chef Instructor, The Culinary Institute of America | Hyde Park, NY
Phil Crispo is chef instructor at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), where he is dedicated to teaching and mentoring industry professionals while also engaging in research and development projects. At the CIA he previously held the position of Assistant Professor in Culinary Arts and has been a faculty member since 2005, in addition to teaching food enthusiasts and industry professionals through the college’s Continuing Education Department. He also contributed to the CIA’s degree programs and served as the executive chef at The Escoffier Restaurant, one of the institute’s award-winning student-staffed establishments.
Phil's early culinary journey took him from Scotland, where he was the executive chef for Drew Norloch, Ltd. at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, to various prominent roles, including executive chef at the Huntingtower Hotel Co. Ltd. in Perthshire, head chef at the Birnam Institute, and sous chef at the Royal Dunkeld Hotel. In the United States, he has worked as a regional executive chef with Compass Group USA, a chef de partie at Harry Cipriani’s restaurant in New York City, and was the co-owner and chef at The Norumbega Inn in Camden Maine, an historic property that offered bespoke hospitality and culinary experiences.
A Certified Hospitality Educator (CHE), Phil holds dual certifications from the CIA and the American Culinary Federation as a ProChef Level III (PCIII) and Certified Executive Chef (CEC). He also possesses an Advanced Culinary Diploma from the Craft Guild of Chefs in London and a certification in pâtisserie and baking from Perth Technical College in Scotland. Phil has received numerous accolades, including the Prize of Honor at the 2009 Société Culinaire Philanthropique Salon of Culinary Art in New York City, the Compass Group Award for Culinary Excellence in 1999, and a Gold Medal at the International Salon Culinaire in London in 1998.
